In the past, this place was known as ‘Mettu Kamakshi House.’ Mettu Kamakshi Ammal had three daughters: Dhanakoti Ammal, Kamakshi Ammal, and Palani Ammal. Naina Pillai was born to Kamakshi Ammal, while the other two daughters had no children. Naina Pillai was the sole child in the house and was dearly loved by all three sisters, who affectionately called him ‘Naina’ (meaning ‘dad’). The family was renowned for its musical heritage, but young Naina showed no interest in music until an ascetic instilled in him a passion for it under mysterious circumstances. From then on, music became Naina Pillai’s sole pursuit. He achieved remarkable success, surpassing any other vocalist of his time, and had many disciples. He was unmatched in the number of students he trained, who lived in his house until they mastered the art. Naina Pillai provided them with food and clothing at no cost. Music resonated in his home from dawn until midnight, and prominent musicians of the time frequently visited to learn from him. He eagerly embraced new teachings from those who had them. Naina Pillai lived in this house from birth until his early death at 45. To honor his contributions to music, the street where he lived was named after him.
