Arpakkam was a major Jain center in Thondai Mandalam. Even now, Jains gather here in large numbers for special occasions. This temple is dedicated to Rishabha Deva, the first of the 24 Tirthankars, who is also known as Adhi Natha, Adhi Deva, and Adhi Bhattaraka. This temple, referred to as the Adhi Bhattaraka Jain Temple, symbolizes the guidance offered by Tirthankars, who are believed to help souls navigate the river of births and deaths. The term ‘Tirthankar’ means ‘ford-builder,’ a metaphor for someone who has crossed the turbulent river of life and can therefore lead others to salvation.
