This temple, situated next to the Vilakkoli Perumal temple in the Thoopul area of Kanchipuram, features an idol of Vedanta Desikar in the sanctum. The deity is depicted with his right hand in the Abhaya Hasta Mudra, symbolizing protection, while holding a manuscript in his left hand. According to tradition, Vedanta Desikar’s son, Nayinar Varadachariar (also known as Kumara Varadacharya), constructed this temple. Worship practices here follow the Vaikhanasa Agama. Locally, it is referred to as ‘Desikar Koil,’ and devotees visit it with great reverence.
Vedanta Desikar was a devoted follower of Varadaraja Perumal, composing several literary works in his praise, the most notable being the Varadaraja Panchashat, which contains fifty Sanskrit verses. In recognition of Desikar’s devotion, Varadaraja Perumal makes periodic visits to this temple during various festivals. During the ten-day Vaikasi Brahmotsavam celebrations (May-June), Varadaraja Perumal visits the Vedanta Desikar temple and stays there for three days. On the third day, during the prominent Garuda Seva procession, Varadaraja offers his garland to Desikar, a tradition also observed during the fifth-day Mohini Avatara festival and the ninth day Punyakoti-vimana procession. Besides the Brahmotsavam festival, Varadaraja visits the Desikar temple on other occasions, including Chitra Pournami.
Additionally, on the twelfth day after Vaikunta Ekadasi, during the Anushtanakulam festival, Varadaraja Perumal, accompanied by his consorts Sri Devi and Bhu Devi (Ubhaya Nachiyar), travels to the nearby village of Sevelimedu. This village is notable for its shrine dedicated to Ramanujar and an ancient well used by Ramanujar for daily holy baths of Varadaraja Perumal. On their return from Sevelimedu, the procession briefly stops at the Desikar temple, highlighting the mutual reverence and close connection between Lord Varadaraja and Sri Vedanta Desika. These frequent visits underscore the temple’s sanctity and the deep bond between the deity and Desikar.
