Mythology

A dispute once arose between Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Vishnu, and Saraswati, the consort of Brahma, regarding who was superior. Indira, the leader of the Devas, supported Lakshmi in the argument. Saraswati appealed to her husband Brahma for a resolution, and he also sided with Lakshmi. As a result, Saraswati left Brahma. Subsequently, Brahma performed an Aswamedha Yagam in honor of Vishnu, without Saraswati by his side. Angered, Saraswati attempted to disrupt the Yagam by enlisting the help of Asuras to obscure the sun and moon, plunging the earth into darkness. Vishnu intervened to assist Brahma. Saraswati then created a massive fireball to destroy the Yagam, but Vishnu held the fireball in his hand, illuminating the Yagasalai. This act earned Vishnu the name Deepa Prakasar, or “Illuminator.” Recognizing her defeat, Saraswati transformed herself into water to cool Vishnu’s hands, symbolizing not only Vishnu’s role in lighting the world but also in dispelling ignorance and instilling knowledge in people’s minds.
