Sculpture
The walls of the sanctum sanctorum in this temple are adorned with exquisite sculptures. Initially, the great Pallava King Mahendra Varman I was a devoted follower of Jainism. During his reign, Buddhism and Saivite sects like Kapalikam, Kalamukham, and Pasupadam were also prominent. Mahendra Varman wrote a Sanskrit drama titled Matha Vilasa Prahasanam, in which he humorously criticized other religious groups. Scenes from this drama, depicted in sandstone bas-reliefs, are installed on the walls of the temple. It is also noteworthy that the king later embraced Saivism, influenced strongly by Saint Appar.
